Answering FAQs I'm asked about therapy.

What to expect from my first session?

The first therapy session is where we meet each other. We talk about what brought you to therapy, your goals or changes you would like to make, and your general life experiences and history. The first session is about figuring out how to work together, if I can help, and how to get there.

Can I see you even if I don't live in West Melbourne?

You don't need to live in West Melbourne to see me. I have clients from across Melbourne and other cities like Sydney and Brisbane. Although I enjoy seeing you in person, I know it's not always possible. If we can't meet in person, we can try online sessions and see if they work.

How often do I need to see my therapist?

I recommend weekly therapy at the start, especially if we are working on front-of-mind or life-challenging issues. Like with all things, consistency makes a difference.

Can I keep seeing you after we complete our Medicare rebate sessions?

You can continue with privately funded therapy after the ten Medicare rebate sessions.

What does a diagnosis mean?

As a clinical psychologist, I use the DSM 5 to formulate a diagnosis based on a set of symptoms I observe. It's helpful to use a diagnosis when writing a letter to your GP or other mental health care professionals for input about medication.

Do I need a diagnosis to see you?

No. You can start therapy as a place for reflection, understanding yourself, and developing insight into why you do or think the way you do. Therapy goes beyond helping with depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns. Therapy is like the gym for your psyche.
